The School of Medicine at Loma Linda University opened in 1909 as part of a broader commitment to training physicians within a faith-centered educational environment. The school has educated medical professionals and researchers for over a century, operating under the principle of providing what the university calls "innovative and compassionate whole person care." The institution includes not only the School of Medicine but seven other schools spanning dentistry, nursing, public health, and allied health professions, all located on or near the Loma Linda campus.

What makes Loma Linda's health sciences mission distinctive is its dual focus: rigorous medical training combined with values-based education in healing that emphasize the whole person, not just the disease. The school earned its AMA 'A' rating in 1922 and has maintained accreditation ever since. Hundreds of physicians trained here have established practices throughout California and beyond, many carrying forward the university's emphasis on patient-centered, holistic care rooted in Adventist health principles.

For Loma Linda households, the presence of world-class medical training and health research nearby creates both opportunity and a shared understanding of health's centrality to a good life. Yet health itself is unpredictable; even the most careful planning cannot prevent illness or accidents.
