Loma Linda was incorporated on September 29, 1970, as a city in San Bernardino County, emerging in the post-war era as more families moved inland from the coast seeking space, schools, and opportunity. The city developed around the anchor of Loma Linda University, which had already been operating for over 60 years by the time incorporation occurred. This founding shape—a residential community built around a major health sciences and educational institution—gave Loma Linda a different character than neighboring Inland Empire industrial and commercial centers.

Today, the city remains primarily residential with a population drawn by quality schools, proximity to employment at the university and its medical center, and a family-oriented community culture. Unlike much of the broader Inland Empire region, which is characterized by warehousing, manufacturing, and logistics, Loma Linda's economy and daily life revolve around education, healthcare, research, and the professional and service sectors that support them. This positioning has allowed the city to maintain residential stability and appeal across decades.

Families in Loma Linda often have deeper community ties than in more transient areas: homeownership is common, neighbors know each other, and institutions like the university and its church anchor social life. This rootedness brings its own financial responsibilities. Mortgages, tuition, dependent children and aging relatives are the realities for many households, and planning for income replacement in case of an unexpected death is how families protect what they have built.
